1. 개요[편집]
스웨덴의 하드 록 밴드 유럽(Europe)의 세 번째 음반에 수록된 첫 번째 싱글곡이다. 본래는 콘서트 오프닝으로 사용하려 했지만 폭발적인 반응에 힘입어 앨범으로 녹음되었다. 발매 당시와 그 이후에도 높은 인지도를 가지고 있다.

- 뮤직비디오는 싱글 앨범 홍보를 위해 만들었으며 영국인 감독 닉 모리스(Nick Morris)가 제작했다. 영상은 스웨덴의 자치구 솔나(Solna)의 솔나할렌(Solnahallen)에서 1986년에 가졌던 이틀 간의 콘서트와 사운드를 점검하는 스텝들의 모습과 스톡홀름(Stockholm)의 전경을 담았다.
- 그룹의 리드 싱어 조이 템페스트(Joey Tempest)에 따르면 영국의 음악가 데이비드 보위(David Bowie)의 1969년 노래 《Space Oddity》에서 영감을 받아 작곡했다.
- 그룹의 멤버들은 처음에는 일렉트로닉 록 스타일의 'The Final Countdown'를 낯설어 했고, 조이 템페스트가 앨범에 수록하자는 제안에 반대했다. 그러나 콘서트 장에서 엄청난 반응을 받은 후 음반회사 'Epic Records'에서 앨범 첫 곡으로 수록하자는 제안까지 들어오자 앨범으로 발매하기로 결정했다.
- 원래는 콘서트 오프닝 곡으로 만들어져 원곡은 6분 가까이 연주되었다. 앨범 제작이 결정되고 이후 방송 출연을 위해 5분, 4분 버전으로 편집되었다.
- 1990년 10월 2일, 동독의 대외 방송국인 라디오 베를린 인터내셔널(RBI)은 'The Final Countdown'의 인트로 부분을 BGM으로 사용했다. 다음날 독일민주공화국은 역사 속으로 사라졌다.
