웨일스 출신의 가수 보니 타일러(Bonnie Tyler)의 노래. 본래 1984년 영화 《Footloose》의 OST에서 인지도를 쌓았고, 싱글 앨범 발매 이후 다양한 광고, 영화 및 TV에서 활용했으며 여러 음악가가 리메이크하여 노래했다.

1984년, 20세기 폭스 텔레비전(20th Century Fox Television)에서 제작한 첩보 드라마 《Cover up》의 오프닝 곡으로 쓰였다.# 노래는 엘리자베스 데일리(Elizabeth Daily)가 녹음했다. 1987년 MBC에서 《특수공작원 아이언맨》으로 방영했다.

1984년 5월, 일본의 싱어송라이터 아사쿠라 미키(麻倉未稀)가 「ヒーロー HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO」로 번안했다.#

2001년 12월, 김종국의 1집 앨범 《Renaissance》에 번안곡 "ONE"을 수록했다. 그러나 원 작곡자 "짐 스타인먼(Jim Steinman)"을 표기하지 않았다.#

2004년 개봉한 드림웍스(DreamWorks)의 애니메이션 《슈렉 2》에서 요정 대모(Fairy Godmother)가 무도회장에서 열창한다. 자신의 아들인 챠밍 왕자를 피오나 공주와 결혼시키기 위해 계략을 꾸몄지만, 공주가 수상함을 눈치채고 무도회장을 나가려 하자 분위기를 바꾸기 위해 직접 나선다. 노래가 흐르면서 하객들이 곧장 환호하는데, 디스코장 등에서 레퍼토리에 항상 포함된 풍경을 은유한다. 동시에 무도회장 밖에서는 주인공 슈렉이 공주를 구하기 위해 동료들의 도움을 딛고 백마 동키를 타고 달려오는데 액션 하나하나가 노래 가사와 부합한다.#

2017년, 기아자동차는 미국 슈퍼볼 광고에 자사의 소형 SUV "니로"를 홍보하면서 BGM으로 삽입했다. 니로(NIRO)와 히로(Hero)의 발음의 유사성과 몸을 사리지 않는 환경운동가의 활동을 통해 친환경 하이브리드 차량의 장점을 부각시켰다.# 슈퍼볼 광고 선호도 조사 플랫폼인 유튜브 "애드블리츠(Ad Blitz)"와 "USA투데이 애드미터(USA Today Ad meter)"에서 동시에 선호도 조사에서 1위에 올랐다.#

2022년 9월, 노르웨이의 애니메이션 《슈퍼 키드 헤일리(Helt Super)》엔딩곡으로 리메이크 버전이 수록되었다.#

2023년 1월, 미국의 싱어송라이터 아담 램버트(Adam Lambert)의 싱글 앨범 《High Drama》에 리메이크 버전이 수록되었다.#
